please define a "franking credit"
Category: glossary by N. Y. From Limoges, France
A type of tax credit found in countries such as Australia that allows domestic companies to pass through taxes that have already been paid on corporate profits. The investor receiving stock dividends will also receive a quantity of franking credits in proportion to the overall tax rate of the company per dollar in profits. When filing personal income taxes, the investor will record as income both the amount of the dividend and the amount of the franking credit; however, the franking credits can be deducted from the total tax due. If the investor has franking credits remaining and no more income tax due, franking credits can be returned as a tax refund to the investor. Franking credits are a type of dividend imputation and a way to reduce or eliminate the double taxation of dividends that occurs in many advanced economies. Franking credits are also calculated for mutual funds that hold Australian-based companies, which are then passed through to investors at year end. This program is relatively new (instituted in 1987) and its effects are watched closely by those who would wish to see a similar system in the United States and other nations. For the larger, blue-chip companies operating in Australia, the franking credit is a great way to promote long-term equity ownership and has led to increases in dividend payouts to investors.

do you know what "fee-based investment" is?
Category: glossary by Iris P. From Monaco
An investment account in which the advisor's compensation is based on a set percentage of the client's assets instead of on commissions. Contrast this to commission-based investment, in which the advisor makes money based on the amount of trades made or the amount of assets sold to the client. The benefit of this type of account is that the advisor's interests are considered to be more in line with those of the investor. For example, if a client has an account worth $500,000 and the advisor's fee is 8% of the assets, the advisor is initially set to receive $40,000. But if the advisor were able to increase the value of the account to $600,000, he or she would then receive $48,000 - an increase of $8,000. On the other hand, if the account value falls, the advisor gets a lower commission payout.
do you know what the "abandonment clause" is?
Category: glossary by T. U. From United States
A clause in a property insurance contract that, under certain circumstances, permits the property owner to abandon lost or damaged property and still claim a full settlement amount. If the insured party's property cannot be recovered, or the cost to recover or repair it is more than its total value, it can be abandoned and the insured party is entitled to a full settlement amount. This type of insurance clause typically comes into play with marine property insurance, such as boats or watercraft. If a property owner's ship is sunk or lost at sea, the abandonment clause affords the owner the right to essentially "give up" on finding or recovering his or her property and subsequently collect a full insurance settlement from the insurer.

please tell me what the "monoline insurance company" is
Category: glossary by U. K. From Huntsville, United States
An insurance company that provides guarantees to issuers, often in the form of credit wraps, that enhance the credit of the issuer. These insurance companies first began providing wraps for municipal bond issues, but now provide credit enhancement for other types of bonds, such as mortgage backed securities and collateralized debt obligations. Issuers will often go to monoline insurance companies to either boost the rating of one of their debt issues or to ensure that a debt issue does not become downgraded. The ratings of debt issues that are securitized by credit wraps often reflect the wrap provider's credit rating. Along with providing credit wraps, monoline insurance companies also provide bonds that protect against default in transactions that deal with physical goods.
please tell me what "senkou span b" is
Category: glossary by D. Wise from United States
A component of the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo indicator that is used to create the 'cloud' of the indicator. Senkou span B is always plotted alongside Senkou span A and the area between the two lines is shaded. The shaded area, known as the cloud, is then used to give traders an idea of future support and resistance. Senkou span B is calculated by using the following formula: Senkou span B is generally regarded as the slowest moving component of the Ichimoku indicator because it is created by using the greatest number of time periods in its calculation (generally 52 time periods). The trend is deemed to be downward when Senkou span A is located below senkou span B. In practice, the indicator is most commonly used to predict the reversal of a current trend when the two senkou spans cross over each other.
